“Lob des Schattens II” (“In Praise of the Shadow II”) is a study of the theory of Tanizaki Jun'ichirô that people in the West tend to eliminate darkness by making light, while people from the East rather add more shadow to the dark.

The exhibition area was without electricity, meaning it was dark for most of the time. During the day, natural light came through the two frosted glass doors. During dusk and at night, there were only the flashing traffic lights from the outside and the light of the emergency exit sign from within.

I placed eight tracing paper sculptures on a longitudinal axis (about 25 m long) across the room. They were painted with high gloss automotive paint on one side. This side was facing the incoming light. The other side of the bodies was made out of the unprocessed transparent paper.

The semi-transparent bodies were very narrow (a depth of 5 cm) and were standing between the columns in such a way that they almost disappeared in the darkness.
